I gently pushed the unit to the left to expose the imposter, and removed it! I can move it back and forth and it's springy to a certain point. We tried what you did--and it worked. I can't believe it..

The Spring that retracts the wiper blades may have come off and jammed the carriage asm, or the purge gears broke and the purge unit is jammed. The large pad is for the black ink and the small one is for colored ink. I had a MP780 that was about 2 years old when it stopped powering on. Don't turn the power off as this will return the printhead to the far right and LOCK IT IN PLACE. The problem is that the sponge gets stuck up. But, based on inkjetonline's post, I reached in and pulled the rubber catepiller tread which pulls the print head, turned it back on and viola! Get More Info Also, when I open the printer the white thing on the far right side is always towards the front side of the printer.
It appears that the purge unit moves forward about 1/4 in.then stops and returns, but there's no sign of anything stopping it. We moved cartridge left and mopped up what we could with paper towels and Qtips. That is why you'll find the print head assembly parked on top of it. The green light (green only) blinks, as if it were waiting for data.I tried uninstalling the printer driver (under xp) v1.80 and reinstalling.

With care you can put it back. I am now getting the famous 6A00 code. Greg. Fixed it!
